Becoming a CBT Motorcycle Instructor:

Option One - Down Trained. You will be trained by an Instructor who has been assessed by the DVSA. You will then be allowed to carry out CBTs on behalf of the Authorised Training Body (ATB) that has down trained you.

Option Two - DVSA Assessed. Take and pass the DVSA Assessment at Cardington. This will allow you to work for an ATB delivering CBTs, down-training up to 10 other Instructors and you'll be able to apply directly to the DVSA to take the DAS assessment.

You must be 21 years or older, have a Great Britain or Northern Ireland Driving Licence and have held a full Category A or A2 licence for at least 3 years.

The DVSA training and development center is in Cardington, Bedfordshire and the assessment takes 2 days. For more information follow this link.

When you have qualified to be a CBT Instructor (Cardington Assessed) and work for an ATB, you will be able to provide CBT courses to learner riders and ‘down train’ up to 10 instructors at the ATB to also deliver the CBT courses (whilst supervised).

Progressing to Direct Access Instructor:

If you would like to become a DAS Instructor you have to apply to the DVSA but first you must have obtained the DVSA Assessed CBT Instructor Qualification.

You must be over 21, have  a Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence and held a full category A or A2 licence for at least 3 years.

The DVSA training and development center is in Cardington, Bedfordshire and the assessment takes half a day. For more information follow this link.
